How to use an anal shower: douching before anal sex and fisting
Why douche at all
Douching rinses the rectum with water so you can bottom, get fisted or play with big toys without worrying. Not everybody needs it: the rectum is normally empty, and a diet with enough fibre plus a regular bowel movement does most of the work. Many men douche only for longer sessions, for fisting or when they simply want the peace of mind. Done right, a quick rinse is harmless. Done wrong, too often or with the wrong water, it irritates the gut and makes things worse. This guide keeps you on the right side of that line.
Which anal shower
- Bulb douche: a rubber or silicone bulb of 200 to 300 ml with a smooth nozzle. Cheap, quick and discreet; ideal for a shallow rinse before ordinary anal sex. Fill, insert, squeeze, hold, release; repeat two or three times.
- Shower hose (shower shot): a hose with a nozzle that screws onto your shower, with a valve to control the flow. Continuous water at low pressure, easy to control, and it reaches deeper than a bulb. The choice of men who fist, take XXL toys or want a thorough clean.
- Enema bag or bulb with gravity: a bag you hang above you; the water flows by gravity, so the pressure is always gentle. Good for a deeper rinse without the risk of too much pressure.
- Bottle and travel douches: a nozzle that fits on a water bottle, for travelling or a quick rinse away from home.
All of these are in douches and enemas. Pick a smooth nozzle with several side holes: it spreads the water and does not spray a single jet onto the wall of the rectum.
When and how long before
Douche 30 to 60 minutes before you play, not one minute before: the last water needs time to come out, and you want to go to the toilet once more before sex. A shallow bulb rinse is enough for anal sex with a partner or a normal toy and cleans roughly the first 10 to 15 cm. A deeper clean with a hose or bag, for fisting, marathon sessions or very long toys, takes longer and you should allow one to two hours before play.
Step by step
- Use plain, lukewarm tap water, about body temperature. Test it on the inside of your wrist first: hot water burns the lining of the rectum, cold water cramps.
- With a shower hose, set the pressure low. Point the nozzle up: the water should rise only 10 to 15 cm. More pressure is never better.
- Put some water-based lube on the nozzle and slip it in gently, a few centimetres. Never force it.
- Let a small amount of water in: a bulb, or 10 to 20 seconds of low flow. Hold it in for 10 to 30 seconds while you breathe and relax, then release on the toilet.
- Repeat until the water runs clear. Two or three rounds are usually enough for a shallow rinse; a deep clean takes more. Changing position, or rubbing your belly, helps the water move and come back out.
- Finish with a normal shower, wash the outside with a mild soap, and give yourself the waiting time before you play.
How often is safe
Water washes away the mucus and the good bacteria that protect the gut, so douching every day, or several times a day, leaves the rectum dry and easily irritated, which makes bottoming less comfortable and slightly raises the risk of infections. As a rule, douche only when you need it, keep it to a few times a week at most, and use as little water as does the job. Fibre supplements (psyllium) every day are the bottom's best friend: a firmer stool means less douching.
What not to do
- No soap, shampoo, salt, vinegar, alcohol, oil or anything else in the water. Plain water only. Cleaning products damage the gut lining.
- No hot water, no high pressure, no forcing the nozzle in.
- Do not fill up until you feel bloated. Small amounts, repeated, work better and are safer.
- With a bulb: keep it squeezed until the nozzle is out, otherwise dirty water is sucked back into the bulb.
- Do not share douches, and clean them with warm water and a toy cleaner after every use; let them dry open.
- Stop and see a doctor if you have cramps that do not fade, bleeding, or pain during or after douching. Do not douche when you have diarrhoea, haemorrhoids that bleed or a stomach bug.
Ready to play
Once you are clean, the rest is lube and patience. Warm up with a plug, use a thick anal lube or a fisting lube for the big stuff, and read Rimming 101 and the size guide for the next steps.
Frequently asked questions
How long before sex should I douche?
Thirty to sixty minutes before for a quick rinse, one to two hours before for a deep clean. The last water needs time to come out.
Which anal douche is best for beginners?
A simple bulb with a smooth nozzle. The Prowler Red Shower Shot is small and easy to take along, and the Aneros Prelude has a one-way valve so dirty water cannot flow back into the bulb. For a deeper clean, the Prowler Red Anal Shower System works with your shower.
How often is it safe to douche?
Only when you need it, a few times a week at most. Douching every day dries out the lining of the rectum and makes it easier to irritate.
Can I add soap, salt or anything else to the water?
No. Use plain lukewarm tap water only. Soap and other additives irritate the lining of the gut.
Do I need to douche before fisting?
Most men do a deeper clean before fisting, one to two hours ahead. The full preparation is in fisting for beginners.
