Restraints & Cuffs
Restraints and cuffs are the gear that holds wrists, ankles, arms or thighs in place during bondage, so one partner gives up control and the other takes it. They range from quick velcro cuffs for a first try to heavy leather suspension cuffs for experienced players, and they are the starting point of most BDSM play.

Material
Velcro cuffs (Ouch! Velcro Cuffs, €12.95) close and open in a second, which makes them ideal for beginners. Metal handcuffs look classic but are hard and can press on the wrist; fluffy or plush lining helps. Silicone cuffs are soft, waterproof and easy to clean. Leather is the most comfortable for longer sessions, spreads pressure well and lasts for years with care.
Fit and safety
A cuff should be snug enough not to slip off, yet leave room for one finger between cuff and skin. Check hands and feet regularly: tingling, numbness, cold or discoloured skin means loosen at once. Never leave a restrained person alone, agree a safe word and a non-verbal signal, and keep bondage scissors within reach, such as the Ouch! Bondage Safety Scissors (€12.95). Never put weight on cuffs that are not made for suspension.
Combining gear
Most cuffs have D-rings to clip to each other, to a hogtie, a spreader bar or bed straps. Rope and tape give more freedom of shape. Matching wrist and ankle cuffs from one collection make a complete set.
For more freedom of shape, combine cuffs with bondage rope and tape or a collar and leash.
Frequently asked questions
Which restraints are best for beginners?
Velcro or soft silicone cuffs: they are comfortable, adjustable and open instantly. A simple bed restraint kit is a good next step.
Leather or velcro cuffs?
Velcro is quick, cheap and easy to release. Leather is stronger, more comfortable for long sessions and holds a buckle or lock, at a higher price.
How tight should cuffs be?
Snug enough not to slip over the hand, with room for one finger between cuff and skin. Loosen immediately at tingling, numbness or cold fingers.
What is a hogtie?
A connector that joins wrist cuffs and ankle cuffs behind the back, holding the bound partner in a kneeling or lying position. Keep sessions short and check circulation often.
Can I tie someone to a bed without a four-poster bed?
Yes. Bed restraint kits run straps under the mattress with a cuff at each corner, and door kits hang over a closed door.
What safety gear do I need for bondage?
A safe word, a non-verbal signal, bondage safety scissors within reach, and never leaving a restrained person alone.
